Traditionally, coriander is a perennial herb. Its sweet-smelling aroma is transmitted by its tender green fruits, and when ripe, turn a brownish yellow. Originating in the Mediterranean region, it is an herb that thrives in black soil and arid regions. Commonly known as cilantro, the leafy herb used in most cuisines, the seeds taken from these leaves are known as coriander. Coriander is widely used in meal preparations .The seeds and the fresh leaves are used widely in Indian dishes all over the world. Considered to be rich in various food elements, the coriander leaves contain protein, fat, minerals, fiber carbohydrates, and water. The minerals and vitamins include: vitamin C, calcium, phosphorus, iron, carotene, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, sodium, potassium, and oxalic acid. Coriander is a powerful herb which has many health benefits. It provides cooling effect to the body and reduces the excessive heat. It helps in digestion and relieves you from any suffering due to accumulation of gas in the alimentary canal. The dried seeds are boiled in water and this juice can be consumed directly to reduce nausea. During summer this helps in satisfying the excessive thirst. To reduce the swelling, pain and burning sensation (due to insect bite) these seeds can be made into a paste and applied on those areas. In perfumes coriander seed is a very valuable ingredient. The water used to boil the seeds and leaves, when gargled, can give temporary relief in the cases of mouth ulcer. It is used as a diuretic and prevents bad breath. During menstrual cycle excess bleeding can be controlled by drinking small amounts of coriander juice. The juice should be fresh and consumed immediately.
